I've been meaning to write about Matt Braunger's standup album 'Soak Up The Night' for a while, but didn't get around to it, what with the packing, moving, and unpacking. And then I saw him last week on Conan and thought "Damn! If I write about it now, people will think I only heard about him because of his appearance on national late-night television" and that's not the case. It is terribly important for me to be seen as cool and ahead of the trends at all times, so there.
Matt Braunger - not be confused with Matt Besser or Matt Belknap, two other L.A. comedy types - used to be a cast member on MAD TV but I only heard of him recently, due to his appearances on I Love Movies and some other pod-oriented broadcasts to which I subscribe. The album, which was put out by Comedy Central Records, is pretty good. The comedian that Braunger reminds me the most of is Dane Cook. Wait, come back! It's mostly his style of delivery - very confident and with a bit of swagger - and the fact that there's quite a lot about drinking, and a bit about watching pornography. But even these are funny, so don't let the D-word C-word put you off, indie-comedy-nerds. That demographic will especially enjoy a bit that's entitled 'Lifting Weights to the Smiths'. Like me, Braunger doesn't like The Doors or 'Piano Man', but unlike me, he hates Cadbury's Creme Eggs, which, if I gave scores, would cost him some points. My favourite bit on the CD is here for you, and involves the guy with the funniest name in all of Portland. I laughed out loud, and hopefully you will too.

A person of interest
As the former Marshall Mathers ably demonstrates in his new video, making fun of ubiquitous celebrities doesn't really take a whole lot of skill, and has surely reached fish in a barrel status by now. This is why I didn't like the show Best Week Ever for a long time. A bunch of comedians I've never heard of making Lohan/Spears jokes? No thanks. This is why I was so impressed when I heard Paul F. Tompkins on The Best Show, and then on his album 'Impersonal', and became a big fan. And now, very similar lightning has struck twice, with the very funny new CD from BWE contributor John Mulaney, entitled 'The Top Part', which just came out last week.
Reasons to be Cheerful
There's a great post on the AV Club at the moment where its writers discuss the things that always make them laugh. And, never wanting to miss a bandwagon, here's my list of nine things that are never not funny to me, each more predictable (or as predictable? No - more predictable) than the last.

A wee bit o'blarney
I found out on Friday that one of my close friends from college is very sick, and so that served to take a lot of the wind out of my weekend. Tried everything I could to take my mind off it - watched some Saxondale, went to see TL/Rx, listened to a lot of the Best Show, didn't do any work, etc. For laughs, I also listened to the new stand up CD from Andrew Daly. Dude has been a staple on the New York and L.A. scenes for a while, which explains why my only exposure to him has been on Root of All Evil and Semi-Pro. Of course, he's a lot funnier than those things allowed him to be.
'Nine Sweaters' consists of nine (actually, eleven) different characters, each very meticulously planned out, that deliver varyingly insane rants. One of them, Jerry O'Hearn, you may have heard on the Comedy Death Ray compilation which I've mentioned on here before. There's an Irishman that loves to spin a tall tale, a smalltown actor who's just arrived in L.A. and is going to make it there, an eighty-year old man with a mind in the gutter, and a comedian whose gimmick - being invisible - may not necessarily be beneficial to the craft. Best of all, and by that I mean most deliriously batshit insane of all, was a guy who is the Life of the Party. I can't really describe him, but suffice to say, he'll get you conga-ing, or die trying. I've put up the shortest clip from the CD (most are >10 mins) for your enjoyment. Unlike Hap Arden, Shooter is about to leave L.A. and this is his send-off. Enjoy!

If I'm not me, who am I?
To celebrate the launch of NME Radio, their big draw is: a new episode of the Ricky Gervais show. Steve and Karl are along for the ride, and it's as good as you'd expect. Karl doesn't understand midgets, monkeys, admires beetles, and would be rubbish on the Apprentice. Like the new song from The Music, this new episode won't make any new fans, but if you're a fan, you'll be loving it. Of course. Some good tunes, too - Vampire Weekend, Guillemots, the Stones...
They're repeating it a whole lot - check the schedule here.
